Eduardo Chadwick, an active ambassador for Chilean wine, is the current owner of Viña Errázuriz. For decades, he and his team have travelled the world promoting the quality and potential of Chilean wine. Eduardo Chadwick has four daughters: Magdalena, María José, Alejandra and María Eugenia.Today, the sixth generation continues to carry on the family legacy with a strong vision of the future focused on sustainable development and the conviction that this is the way to maintain Viña Errázuriz's position as a global benchmark for quality and image.
1870 THE FOUNDATION
While most Chilean vineyards were still being planted close to the Chilean capital of Santiago, Don Maximiano Errázuriz looked further north. After riding 100km. (62 miles) on horseback over the course of two days, he discovered the Aconcagua Valley. Right there and then, he declared that “from the best land, the best wine” would be obtained. This is a message that continues to resound in our winery 150 years later.
1983 EDUARDO CHADWICK AND HIS VISION OF QUALITY WINES
Eduardo Chadwick joined the winery in 1983, remaining true to Don Maximiano’s vision of producing wines of quality, and with the firm intention of building Chile’s reputation as a world-class appellation. He travelled to Bordeaux to study winemaking concepts with Emile Peinaud, the father of French winemaking.
1993 PIONEERS IN PLANTING SYRAH IN CHILE
With the spirit and visionary attitude of its founder, Viña Errázuriz was among the wineries that pioneered planting Syrah vineyards in Chile. The Mediterranean climate of the Aconcagua Valley enabled this variety to really thrive, producing diverse expressions from the mountains to the ocean.
2004 BERLIN TASTING THE QUEST FOR RECOGNITION
In a historic event, Viña Errázuriz organized a blind tasting in Berlin alongside Steven Spurrier. Competing against prestigious wines from Italy and France, Viña Errázuriz stood out with Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve and KAI securing top positions. This milestone was followed by a series of 22 international tastings, demonstrating the consistency and excellence of Chilean wines on the global stage.
2010 INAUGURATION OF THE DON MAXIMIANO ICONIC WINERY
Viña Errázuriz inaugurated the Don Maximiano iconic winery, a new milestone in the production of fine wines, with the goal of positioning Chile as a world-class appellation. Its entire construction was designed in accordance with a sustainable, energy-efficient philosophy and it was mentioned by Jancis Robinson and Hugh Johnson in the 7th edition of the World Atlas of Wine in 2013 as a flagship for modern, sustainable production in the New World.
2017 THE BEST CHILEAN WINERY
Robert Parker´s Wine Advocate, Extraordinary Winery Awards named Viña Errázuriz the Best Chilean Winery.
2018 A LIFE DEDICATED TO GAINING RECOGNITION FOR CHILEAN WINE
Eduardo Chadwick was named “Decanter Man of the Year”. He was the first Chilean ever to receive this award. FIRST 98-POINT SCORE FROM ROBERT PARKER´S WINE ADVOCATE FOR A CHILEAN WINE. For the first time in the history of Robert Parker, a Chilean wine earned 98 points: Las Pizarras Chardonnay 2017 was selected as the best Chilean wine, marking a milestone for the Chilean wine industry.
2019 LAS PIZARRAS EARNS WORLD ACCLAIM
James Suckling singled out Las Pizarras Pinot Noir among the world’s Top 10 Wines and awarded 99 points to Las Pizarras Chardonnay and Las Pizarras Pinot Noir, both from the 2018 vintage.
2020 VIÑA ERRÁZURIZ CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF HISTORY AND OPENS UP THE FAMILY’S WINE CELLAR
Viña Errázuriz celebrated 150 years of history with a special edition of Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve vintage 2017 and MAX, which represents the visionary and pioneering spirit that has endured for six generations. It also opened up the family cellar housing the library of historical vintages that have been safeguarded as testimony of the history and ageing process. Kept in excellent conditions, each wine reflects the style and technological resources available in each decade since 1983.
2021 TOMÁS COMES ONBOARD AS HEAD WINEMAKER
Tomás has a degree in agronomy with a major in winemaking from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He was appointed Head Winemaker at Viña Errázuriz in May 2021 and arrived with a keen desire to learn about the winery’s experience and the renowned quality of its wines and to contribute towards conserving the unique and distinctive style for which the winery has come to be known around the world. With his more youthful perspective, he hopes to contribute towards modernizing the winemaking processes, incorporating new technologies and teamworking.
