Raúl Pérez
The Dynamic Nature of the Winery
At Raúl Pérez Bodegas y Viñedos, everything from the vineyards and brands to the types of wine produced is in a constant state of evolution. This perpetual change is a reflection of the personality and ingenuity of Raúl Pérez, a renowned winemaker and oenologist. As described by Luis Gutiérrez, the Spanish representative for Robert Parker, Raúl is a free spirit: he is always inventing, creating, tasting, and reinventing himself and his wines. This dynamic character shapes the winery’s ethos and output.
The winery works with both its own vineyards and grapes sourced from other growers. It produces a range of white and red wines, focusing on native grape varieties. Production is limited, depending on the quantity of grapes harvested each season. Although the winery is located in El Bierzo, its wines are also crafted in other regions, including León, Rías Baixas, Ribeira Sacra, and Monterrei.
Winemaking Philosophy
The philosophy of Raúl Pérez Bodegas y Viñedos is deeply influenced by its creator’s principles. The winery is committed to traditional craftsmanship and minimal intervention in the vineyard, prioritising an understanding of the land and the unique climate of each site. Respect for the natural ripening times of every grape variety is central to their process.
The goal is to produce wines that are long-lasting, enjoyable both immediately and after two decades in the bottle. There is a distinct preference for native and endangered grape varieties, which further underscores the winery’s dedication to preserving wine heritage and authenticity.
