Herdade do Esporão
Location and Integration: Herdade do Esporão is situated 170km from Lisbon, within Portugal’s renowned Alentejo DOC, specifically in the Reguengos de Monsaraz sub-region.
Climate and Landscape: Alentejo is defined by its hot, dry summers, gentle springs and autumns, and cold, dry winters. The region’s expansive plains and cork oak forests distinguish it as Portugal’s largest wine-producing territory. As a Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) area, Alentejo comprises eight sub-regions, each with a deep-rooted tradition in viticulture.
Estate Characteristics: Spanning 1,840 hectares, Herdade do Esporão’s geographical boundaries have remained unchanged since 1267. The estate benefits from exceptional agricultural conditions, including marked temperature variations, seven distinct soil types, and a rich biodiversity that enhances and sustains the ecosystem.
Vineyards and Crops: The estate features 441 hectares of vineyards—out of a total 605 hectares in Alentejo—and 93 hectares of organic-certified olive groves alongside other crops. Approximately 40 grape varieties and two olive varieties are cultivated here, complemented by orchards and vegetable gardens.
