The definition of which countries can be considered ‘New World’ is open to debate. Generally it is accepted to mean all territories outside of Europe and Asia, especially the Americas.
In wine terms, we can broaden that to include most of the southern hemisphere, including Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Here, viticulture and winemaking was not introduced by an ancient civilisation, but by much more recent European explorers who took the vine, and the know-how, with them on their voyages.
Our tasting will span three New World continents and countries. Some can boast 350 years of commercial wine production, whilst others were planted barely 50 years ago. All owe a debt to the wine history of Europe, but have carved an identity all of their own.
The Wines
Our wines are a prime example of how the New World continues to take inspiration from Europe, but also treads its own path. There are grape varieties that represent a classic French heritage – Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot – but also wines where the influence is from elsewhere in the ‘Old World’, with Bonarda originally from Italy and Albariño originally from Spain. We also look at one variety created in, and synonymous with, its New World home.
We’ll compare how these six New World wines differ from the Old World template on which they are based. That might be down to different geography, climate and soil, but also the attitudes, customs and traditions of the places where they are now made. Full list of wines below.
The normal price of this selection is over £83, plus £12.50 delivery. But exclusively for this tasting the price is £75 including UK mainland delivery.
How does it work?
The tasting is split over two consecutive Thursday evenings. We’ll open three bottles per night, but they’ll drink well through the weekend so nothing will be wasted. And remember: if you cannot join us live for any session, our ‘catch-up’ service allows you to taste along to the recordings at your leisure.
- Tasting tickets and wines are purchased separately
- The ticket price is per household, not per person
- The ticket covers both sessions
- After you purchase your ticket, you’ll see a link to buy the wines
- We’ll make a recording of each session in case you miss one
- You may attend without buying the wines.
