Does it really make a difference whether a wine is made by a traditional family winery or a large corporation?

Family estates are the bedrock of European wine, many having been in the same family hands for generations. This tasting focuses on six wines from historic estates, some dating back to the 16th century.

The concept of terroir – that a wine reflects it’s precise origins – is certainly bound-up in these traditional vineyards. Established long ago, they can boast very old vines, all farmed either organically or sustainably, where winemakers know each square metre of land intimately. It’s a provenance that the world of mega-brand wines cannot hope to replicate.

THE WINES

We’ll kick off with a rosé that was a Wine of the Week on wine-pages.com. Hailing from Beaujolais and 100% Gamay, it is packed with charming red fruits and zippy acidity, and is certified ‘Terra Vitis’. We’ll move on to Provence, but it’s white, not pink. From clay and limestone soils, it’s a crisp and mouthwatering blend of local heroes Clairette and Rolle (Vermentino). Completing week one, we move to South Africa for a French oak-aged Cabernet Sauvignon. This is from the Basson family’s Black Empowerment initiative called ‘Visio Vintners’, co-owned by workers who are employed in every aspect, from vineyards to marketing.

Amazingly, Joseph Mellot’s ancestors founded the company in 1513 with vineyards in Sancerre. Today led by Catherine Corbeau-Mellot, we’ll taste the ‘Destinéa’, Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Next up a Beaujolais ‘Cru’ from the terroir of Régnié which is also ‘no added sulphur’. We’ll complete the line-up in the South of France and a Grenache/Syrah blend from the Rhône superstar family of Michel Chapoutier, once again with no added sulphur.

Our supplier is offering this selection at an amazing price for us – exclusively for this tasting. The retail price of the six wines is £95, but you will pay just £65 including UK mainland delivery. Delivery to islands and N.I. will cost an extra £5.
