Viña Real Gran Reserva Rioja 2018 - En Premier.
BACKGROUND & SALES INFORMATION: C.V.N.E., or Compañía Vinícola del Norte del España (the Northern Spanish Wine Company), was founded by two brothers in the town of Haro in 1879. Today the business is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family. C.V.N.E. is now comprised of 8 wineries across Northern Spain. Cune, Imperial, Viña Real and Contino in Rioja, Roger Goulart in the world-famous Cava region, Bela, in the higher elevation surroundings of Ribera del Duero, Virgen del Galir, nestled between the slate-rich hills of Valdeorras and our most recent venture, La Val, in the Atlantic-influenced Galician region of Rías Baixas.
Launched in the 1920s, Viña Real became known for pioneering wines from Rioja Alavesa. A careful balance between tradition and modernity has defined Viña Real’s ethos ever since. The Viña Real Gran Reserva is exceptional value for money, a high scoring wine which can age for decades but is ready drink on release. Luis Gutierrez of Wine Advocate scoring the 1959 vintage 100 points in a vertical tasting held in 2015 is a great example of the potential that Viña Real Gran Reserva has. Luis also recently awarded the 1947 Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial 100 points in a recent tasting comparing Rioja and Bordeaux from 1947. The ‘Especial’ name is awarded to the Viña Real Gran Reservas made in remarkable vintages.
VINTAGE 2018: The 2018 harvest at Viña Real began on the 1st and ended on the 26th of October. The autumn of 2017 was dry, extending one of the worst droughts in recent years. When winter arrived, it brought much needed rain, cold weather, frosts and snowfalls which were all common years ago. The spring of 2018 was cold and wet but was followed by a warm summer.
Bearing in mind that this was a wet year, the harvest was very selective and the red wines in general are rich, intense, and have good levels of fresh acidity. Wines with good ageing potential and of excellent quality.
“The classical red 2018 Viña Real Gran Reserva Especial (this year, it has the word Especial on the label) was produced with grapes from their own vineyards in the villages of Laguardia and Labastida in search of a gastronomical wine that is supple and complex. In 2018, the wine has a little more acidity even if the grapes were picked between October 1 and 26. It’s mostly Tempranillo with 5% Graciano, moved by gravity. It matured in barrels for 24 months to qualify for the category. [...]. It’s serious and a little closed at first, nuanced and subtle. It closes the classical range at Viña Real where they have now added more modern wines, Bakeder and La Virgen. It has more finesse and might be a little lighter, with no exuberance. I sometimes like austerity… 30,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.” - 95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, Feb 2025
