Virgen del Galir Val do Galir Godello 2023.
The 2023 Val do Galir A Malosa Godello was sourced from 50% of their 21-hectare A Malosa vineyard in the village of Éntoma in the Galir Valley, where they have different expositions, altitudes (400 to 600 meters) and slate and schist soils. It fermented in different materials (7,000-liter stainless steel vats, 2,000-liter oak foudres and some 500- and 600-liter barrels) and matured in the foudres and barrels for seven months. It has high ripeness, 14% alcohol and very good freshness (pH 3.0) and acidity (seven grams!). It's a little tight and closed, serious and perhaps a tad reductive (not negative). It's powerful but fresh and elegant, a characteristic of the 2023 whites, vibrant and fine-boned, nicely textured. 22,000 bottles and 300 magnums produced. It was bottled in April 2024.
Purchased by CVNE from Rioja, this property in Valdeorras has constantly been expanded and refurbished and the wines fine-tuned. They recovered some old plots in the zone of As Ermitas with Merenzao (Trousseau) and Brancellao grapes; the winery was extended, and they introduced ceramic and concrete vessels and 1,200- and 4,000-liter oak vats. Total production is 117,000 bottles—72,000 of white and 45,000 of red. Most of the wines tasted were from 2023, with one each from 2022 and 2021. 2023 was the earliest harvest in Valdeorras, starting in August after a rainy spring and a warm and dry summer. Alcohol levels were higher, but the pH and acidity was better because yields were 15% lower than in 2022. They consider 2023 a very good vintage for them there.
