Clos Martinet is crafted from grapes grown each year in the Mas d’en Martinet vineyard, located within Gratallops village. The vineyard’s slate soil imparts a distinctive minerality to the wine, while the sun-drenched, sloping terrain adds depth and complexity to every vintage. These elements combine to grant Clos Martinet its unique character year after year.

The vineyards are primarily planted with local varieties: Red Grenache, Carignan, and Downy Grenache. These grapes best capture the essence of Priorat, expressing its rich traditions and terroir. Alongside these, Syrah, Merlot, and Cabernet are maintained as a tribute to pioneering winemakers like Josep Lluís Pérez. By blending traditional local grapes with international varieties, Clos Martinet honors its roots while embracing innovation—defining its distinctive identity.

Over the years, the vineyard has added more indigenous grape varieties and now works with native yeast. Gradually, the winemakers have shifted away from a purely technical approach. Instead, they engage in a thoughtful dialogue with nature, seeking to authentically express the spirit of the Clos Martinet vineyard in every bottle.

As with many other wines, I had two vintages to taste of their flagship red, which is always interesting, but one vintage tends to suffer in the comparison. In this case, the 2020 Clos Martinet played with a disadvantage, as the year was challenging, with unusual rain and fungus problems, almost unheard of in Priorat. This is a completely atypical wine, with more Syrah (40%, when it's usually 18%...) than Garnacha.

They focused very much on saving this vineyard and were able to make a volume of wine (but 50% less than the potential of the vineyard). This is a lot lighter; the wine has 14% alcohol but feels light... It feels light and HAS light. They produced 10,000 bottles of it - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate, Sep 30, 2022.
