TALISKER: MISSIONS MADE BY THE SEA

For nearly 200 years, the Talisker distillery has been standing proudly by the sea, embracing the elements in a land of extremes that is the inspiration for the whisky we craft.

In recent years we have sought to unlock this wilderness and create unrepeatable whiskies that awaken the elements, which forge our spirit. Our mission at heart: to release a rare and trailblazing collection of Single Malt Scotch Whiskies that resound with the spirit of nature’s untamed power.

Three years ago, an inaugural journey included cask staves that charted the routes of The Atlantic Challenge on a single-handed sailboat, and in a second expression cask staves travelled aboard the mission ship on an expedition to South Africa’s great undersea kelp forests, to help preserve their unique environment.

TALISKER 45YO: ICE FRACTURED CHARACTER

In the last expression this adventurous series, we have again partnered with kindred wild spirits PARLEY, a global environmental organisation and network of creatives, scientists and innovators - and ventured to the glacial regions of the Northern Hemisphere, a land of indispensable, frozen beauty, to shine a light on this transforming environment.

For 96 hours, heavily charred American Oak casks were placed on the frozen land and exposed to the raw biting Arctic winds. Through howling blows and crunching, frost- laden snow, the cask wood took on new character, allowing us to lay to rest our rare whisky, nearly half-century old, in ice-fractured casks.

Talisker distillery’s first-ever release of a 45-year old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, the pinnacle of this remarkable series, reveals a precious liquid finished in casks that undertook the boldest elemental adventure of all.

Made by The Sea. Activated by Ice.

TALISKER FIRST EVER 45 YEAR OLD: Talisker distillery’s first-ever release of a 45-year-old Single Malt Scotch whisky, aged for over four decades and then finished in ice-fractured casks. This is the finale to an adventurous series of wild-whisky experiments - the third and last of the Talisker Xpedition Oak Series, a collection of rare, high-aged Single Malt whiskies.

FRACTURED BY ICE: 12 of Talisker’s heavily charred American Oak casks were taken on a Glacial Voyage into Canadian ice fields and exposed to sub-zero temperatures and raw, biting Arctic winds. The increased surface area available for the whisky to interact with the wood, during the finishing period, enabled the whisky to travel deeper into the casks and obtain spicier & sweeter aromas from the American Oak ex Bourbon barrels, to unearths new, resilient depths of Talisker’s character.

TALISKER GLACIAL ADVENTURES: Intrepid travellers can now embark on their own Talisker Glacial Adventure, a once in a lifetime icy experience in Iceland and Alaska to escape from everyday life , reconnect with nature and savour a dram of Talisker’s wildest whisky yet/ These icy adventures are available to book through leading luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent.

Appearance: - Glowing pale amber. Exceptional beading.

Nose: - Rich, dry and mellow, with a light peppery prickle. Clear maritime top notes speak of seaweed and iodine; their glacial mineral companions suggest slaked lime and salt crystals. Below, complex sweet aromas hint at dried fruits and creamy vanilla, bringing depth and richness. Light smoke threads the background, touched by aromatic sandalwood. A drop of water adds a trace of almond toffee: the other aromas remain, joined by a note of hemp rope.

Body: - Full, rich.

Palate: - The texture is wondrously oil-smooth and mouth-filling; the taste starts toffee-sweet then becomes mouth-wateringly salty and increasingly peppery; even at this age there is a striking intensity to it, and a fine chili ‘catch’. A dash of water integrates these tastes. An attractive saltiness to the toffee now suggests salted caramels, with slightly less pepper.

Finish: - Very long, with a glorious chili pepper effect and a trace of candle-wax; this grows in the aftertaste, in which both saltiness and pepper also persist. Saltier if water is added, with less pepper and faint scented smoke.
