The Bien Nacido Estate Pinot Noir offers one of the finest expressions of their vineyard, with grape selection limited to only 2% of all Pinot Noir grapes planted at the Estate. Coming from 4 distinct blocks - Block 1, Block 31, Block 32 and Block 40 - this wine embodies the characteristics that the Santa Maria Valley has become known for.

The vineyard has a great diversity of soils containing Elder and Chamise shaly loams with Pleasanton sandy loam. It is both savory and spicy, with full black fruit character and beautiful floral notes. They allow fermentation of the Pinot Noir to happen naturally and age these wines for 16 months in 45% new French oak. This wine was bottled unfned and unfiltered.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard comes from across the estate and was matured in about 45% new oak. Grapes were entirely destemmed this year. "I was really worried about smoke taint," winemaker Anthony Avila says. "It's said that you must discard all the green parts of the plant. It was the right choice, and I'd do it again." Instead of using whole clusters, "We kept our foot on the gas in terms of extraction," Avila explains. "We did more punch downs and longer pump overs." Medium ruby in color, the Bien Nacido Pinot Noir features intense aromas of cranberry sauce, blood orange, mushroom, tar and forest floor with accents of cinnamon and licorice. The medium-bodied palate is super silky and loaded with sweet berry preserves. Its oak spices are well integrated, its acidity bright, and it finishes long and spicy - Erin Brooks The Wine Advocate.
